In the interests of helping others who may be in a similar position. The cause of my problems seems to be a burnt Gnd trace on the back of the board.
Its been repaired and is connecting fine now :-)

Awesome mate well done. I resolved my connection problems also, well I say I, in actual fact It was repaired but the cause for a burnt earth trace (from the serial chip I think).

I may learn otherwise, but in my case I am fairly confident that I have ruled out the computer being the issue. I must stress I am certainly not an expert ...

Tried that but thank you for taking the time to reply. I have had a trawl over the site and it seems that the problem has raised its head quite a few times. I have a niggle that I have somehow damaged the unit as it seems very strange that it has stopped working suddenly . I am hopeful that perhaps ...
