Hall effect crank shaft / cam shaft sensor

Hi,
Looking for a bit of info on how to hook up a hall effect camshaft and crankshaft sensor. Image attached shows how to test the sensor so I know which pin does what, and I know I need to hook crank signal to VR1IN+ and cam to VR2IN+, but need further info on ground and power.

Should I use 12v ...

Is this the best way to deal with the VVT solonoid?
Im planning on activating the VVT solenoid above 4000rpm and when under load as per the pic. Not sure if this is exactly the best conditions to use or is there a specific VVT function in microsquirt?

Also, trying to sort out the crank and cam ...

Further to this, I have been able to connect to the Microsquirt using the 5v serial connections on the board as detailed on this page http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=323337 using a 3.3 - 5v FTDI cable. This leads me to believe that the TTL - RS232 chip on the board is faulty or ...

Im having issues connecting to a new microsquirt v3. Unit has never been fitted, I'm supplying power, ground and serial pins (TX,RX,GND) only.
I don't seem to be able to connect tunerstudio or any other serial connection.
