Hi Joe, thank you for your informative response, think I have sorted it by adding a 1k resistor in line with the trigger lead from -ve side of the coil. Tacho reads true and no more spikes . Just have to get down to tuning it now.

Thanks Guys think ive finally sorted it, it does indeed seem that I have megaquirt 1. Used easytherm to load megasquirt 1 v.3000 s.19 file and was met with success. obviously not working becasue I was trying to load the wrong firmware.
