Tired of dealing with altitude / weather

Post by fordfanboi »

So I've decided EFI would make a GREAT Christmas gift for myself. :D

I live in CO, and as you can guess, 30 minutes can easily mean 4000' in elevation variance. Also, getting the motor to fire in the winter is abysmally difficult without a choke. Since I'm a software engineer with emphasis in robotics, I figured MegaSquirt would be pretty trick for my application.

Here's the details of my existing motor. I have some carburetion issues, so the dyno read 11.5 a/f ratio when she pulled 402 RWHP. She should be capable of around 475 or so RWHP once tuned, so I'll build the EFI setup based on that figure.

Here's a rundown on the motor I'm running and hopefully it'll help ya'll guide me to the proper components.
408ci Engine Details:
Cubic Inches: 408 (stroked 351W)
Compression: 10.7:1
Crankshaft: SCAT 9000 series
Bore: 4.030
Stroke: 4.00
Rods: SCAT Forged H Beam 6.2"
Pistons: Probe Forged 19.3cc dish
Timing Chain: Edelbrock Double Roller
Oil Pan: Milodon 8qt.
Crank Dampner: Summit SFI

Cylinder Head Details:
Brand & Model: Air Flow Research AFR205
Valves: 2.08 / 1.60
Port Work: CNC ported and polished
Components: Air Flow Research valvesprings
Rockers: Crane Gold 1.6 Roller 3/8 stud ( 974D )

Camshaft Details:
Brand & Model: Crower 15445
Duration adv int/exh (0.050 int/exh): 285/292 (254/260)
Gross lift int/exh: 0.597/0.578
Lobe Separation: 106
Cam advance/retard: -4 degrees
Lifters: Crower mechanical roller

Induction System Details:
Intake: Edelbrock Victor Jr 351W
Port Work: Matched
Carb: Holley 750 Doublepumper ( milled choke horn )
Carb spacer: BG Systems phenolic 1/2" 4 hole spacer
Fuel Pump: Summit high volume
Air Filter: K&N 14x3

Exhaust System Details:
Hedders: Hedman Shorty 351W Swap
Pipe Diameter: 3"
H-Pipe: Yes
Mufflers: Dynomax Super Turbos
Tailpipes: Dump in front of axle

Ignition Details:
Distributor: Mallory Unilite with HEI conversion cap
Ignition: Mallory HyFIRE IVc
Coil: MSD Blaster II
Wires: Ford Motorsport 9mm plug wires
I plan to machine my Victor to accept port injection.
I'm looking at snagging the Edelbrock 3878 Throttle Body
I believe I need around 36lb injectors
I need a wideband O2 sensor. Do I just need the sensor or do I also need a digital gauge or other device? Would THIS work? I currently am using a single wire O2 sensor, but I assume I need wideband, correct?

What temperature sensor do I need? Any part numbers for a 351w?

What fuel pump / regulator do I need? I currently have a 140gph / 15psi pump.

Which MegaSquirt unit do I need?

What else do I need to help it adjust for altitude and weather ( temp )? A day a the dragstrip can see a 6500' to 8500' adjusted elevation swing. :?

Thanks a TON ya'll! :D

The gauge is not necessary. But a sensor alone will not get you far. You need a controler for any wide-band O2 sensors.

Most stock IAT sensors will work. Not sure on 351W specific applications, but stock GM or Ford sensors can easily be adapted to fit your application

What fuel pump / regulator do I need? I currently have a 140gph / 15psi pump.
With port injection you will need a higher pressure pump/regulator. You will need to look for a port injection pump and regulator. Normally the pressures on the pump will be 60-100 psi. The regulator will need a similar range (30-60 psi). An adjustable regulator is preferable. For a pump look into using the E150 pump from late model Ford vans and trucks. Many people have had good experiences with these pumps. Very reliable and fairly cheap.

I believe that MS1 with the extra code would be best for your application. Realtime barometric correction code has been developed for this version of MS.

What else do I need to help it adjust for altitude and weather ( temp )?
Temperature is taken care of. A second MAP sensor will be needed though.

Regarding the realtime barometric correction, I've just modified my MS2 v3.0 with an extra MAP sensor, the prototype area on the v3.0 PCB makes for a very neat installation.

Havent had the engine running yet but if I add a bit of suction to the new MAP you can see it impact the pulse widths when running on the Stimulator.

This is for a very similar setup although a bit smaller and a chevy, 383ci, AFR 195cc, Hyd Roller cam from CompCams.

Have a look at the LC-1 setup for the wideband control, as mentioned before you need a controller for the wide band sensor, its not as easy as just plumbing in a wideband sensor, though the LC-1 package integrated into MS is pretty straight forward to install.

I concur with the Eric, you cannot use a WB without a controller. Popular now days is the Innovate LC1 or LM1. They normally come with sensors.

You can use a stock Ford temp sensor, but if you have none now you should get a GM sensor, MS is setup for this type sensor for both the Engine temp and the intake air temp. See the Manual for part numbers. http://www.megasquirt.info/v22manual/mwire.htm#clt

You'll need a fuel pump that can flow that at 40psi, the Walbro 255 GSL392
is popular. Again see the Manual http://www.megasquirt.info/v22manual/minj.htm#supply

I would use MS1 on a V3.00 board and MSnS-extra

Ok, I'm preparing to place an order for a MS 1 setup... so before I do, is the MS1 with PCB 3.0 ( MSNS_Extra ) still the way to go for altitude correction / realtime barometric readings, or has someone ironed it out and tested it on the MS2?

Thanks!

fordfanboi,

Realtime baro correction has been in the MS-II code since the begining, and works very well (I have had it on my car for over a year). There's more on this here: http://www.megasquirt.info/ms2/install.htm#baro

I think the reason you don't hear more about is it is because it doesn't give any trouble, so no-one has brought it up.

Lance.

One question i have is it required to use the same MAP sensor for both MAP and barometric correction? Specifically on MS1

Thanks
