Serial devices are fairly standard. Generally picking all the defaults works when installing a USB/serial adapter, except as noted in this thread:

So read through that thread. In general, the comms set-up is handled mostly by MegaTune (baud rate = 115200 -MS-II, 9600 - MS-I, data bits = 8, stop bits = 1, flow control = none).
The external monitor port is most likely to be a three row SVGA connector, and has nothing at all in common with a DB9 serial port (other than a cursory physical similarity).
