bosch bov question

I picked up a bosch bov today - 0280142001. I wonder what the connector controls. It measures ~65ohm and clicks when energized, I think when energized it opens up a small internal passage between the exit port and the vacuum port. Could this possibly be some kind of bov/iac hybrid ?

I've done some searching and nothing comes up on this part#.

yes, I will do some more experiments. I was just wondering if someone recognized it offhand and KNEW the answer.

I'm pretty certain that this is an IAC valve in the BOV - can anyone confirm ?

I've never heard or seen of such a thing. Anyone else ? Is there any info I'm missing to assist in making an educated guess ?

I use the plain (non-electric) version on some turbo installs. The 001 would not be an IAC because it doesn't run behind the throttle blades on a stock install (Saabs and Volvos I've seen with these). Normal operation of the non-electric types allows air to bypass during idle and low loads, closes during boost and reopens when the throttle is closed enough for the manifold to see sub-atmo pressure.

I haven't researched these but it would seem the electric solenoid allows the air to bypass under boost - allowing a reduction or elimination of pressure to the engine under certain conditions (warmup, detonation, overboost, etc.) such as with the Saab APC det control system... maybe. It could only be an IAC if it allowed air behind the throttle plates; but then it couldn't act as a typical BOV or pressure bypass.

I almost picked one up at the 'yard a while back. Now you've got me curious and I 'll get one on my next trip!

PS: If it IS a selectable boost 'defeater' then it would make a great 'valet' switch! Maybe I'll go to the 'yard tomorrow... :lol:

That part is not a blow-off valve:

One of the numbers is a Saab p/n. Looking in my parts CD, it comes up as a part used on NON-turbo, 8-valve, CIS-powered Saabs in the mid-80s.

From the diagram, it looks like the valve is actuated to bypass intake air from downstream of the CIS plate to upstream of it.

If you're looking for a decnt, inexpensive bypass valve, check out the later Bosch valve for Saabs, p/n 4441895 (Bosch #0280142110). This is the only valve Saab sells for their turbo cars, including the Viggens, which make up to 20psi stock. Because Saab superceded all earlier valves, you might be able to find one in the pull-a-part for just a couple dollars...

duh! - I should have though this out better :oops:

also, the bypass has a check valve in it. It only allows air to pass into the valve.
