Using a Yamaha R1 coilpack with EDIS-4

Post by torn81 »

Hello

I have a coilpack from a yamaha R1 that I wanted to use with EDIS-4 (to go along MS2), and after verifying the resistance, I find this:

Primary resistance from the R1 coilpack : 3 ohm

Primary resistance from a ford escort coilpack : 1.3 ohm

My two questions are:
Should I substract the 0.7 ohm I get from just touching the two multimeter tip together ? It would then make the R1 coilpack to 2.3 ohm, and the ford escort coilpack to 0.6 ohm.

Would EDIS-4 work with coils like this ? Or it will fry or the spark will be weak (if at all)

Thanks for your input !

We have found that EDIS will happily fire most coils out there, and I'll bet yours will be no exception. As EDIS current limits to 6.5 amps or so, the coil resistance on its own is probably not such a concern. Coil inductance, on the other hand, is directly proportional to spark energy at a given coil current. Unfortunatley, measuring inductance is not simple with the electrical test equipment most of us have at hand, so it's hard to know the actual impact of swapping coils.

I started a thread a year ago regarding EDIS coil compatibility, to see if we could start a list of non-Ford coils being used successfully with EDIS. Try a search to see if that thread is still available. In the end I don't recall ever seeing a coilpack that was deemed 'incompatible'.
