What model Yamaha are we talking about here? What kind of sensor are you using for your tach input?

If it's a Hall effect sensor, you'll need to build an extra circuit to process the signal.

If it's a variable reluctance sensor, it should work just fine, but there is a known problem where some Microsquirts have the shield and center wire VR in pins (pins 32 and 33) reversed. If the shield on your VR in wire is going to pin 32, you could either try reversing the connections at the pickup or swapping the pins in the Ampseal connector.

Its A 88 FZR 1000.
I am using the tacho signal wire...its the grey wire. both of the coils have a permanent live and are triggered by 2 seperate wires. the grey one goes through a diode block...which i assume alters the signal. i have disconnected the tacho, to eliminate any noise. i have also tried both of the option wires....but still no good.
i would use the crank sensor...but the crank only has 7 markings on it..
just another thought...can i use a inductive pickup..directly off of one my plug leads...the same as they use on a timing light. i know you can buy tacho's that run from a lead

Thanks Gary

I've got an 82 SECA 750. It uses TCI ignition, with a grey wire for 2/3 and the tach, and an orange wire for 1/4. These are also the colors of the pickup signals that go into the TCI box. If your coloring is the same, you should be able to hook up the VR1 inputs with the ground (shield, unless your pins are reversed, as a lot are) going to the black wire going into the TCI box, and the signal (center conductor, again with the reversed pins caveat) going to either the orange or gray.

All of this is assuming your ignition setup is similar. Also, make sure to connect to the inputs to the TCI box, and not the lines running to the coils. On mine there is a six pin plug that includes the inputs, and a four pin one that connects to the coils.

If your setup is not similar, check your schematic to see where the ignition module gets its timing signals.

Paul

Paul
the wires you are talking about..are these the option + and -.
it sounds like the wiring is very similar, my grey wire is for the tacho, i have orange and grey going to the coils. i have a small black box in top of the ignitor which has a 6 pin plug with grey wires coming out of it.
are you saying to use both of the option wires...one to +ve and the other to -ve

Hi Gary,

On mine I'm using VR+ and VR- (pins 32 and 33), not Opt. If you're only using uS for fuel, I don't think you'll need to hook up both VR1 and VR2; just the VR1 input should be sufficient for RPM information for the ECU. I'm using both VR1 and VR2 since I am controlling spark as well as fuel.

Cheers,
Paul

Paul...spot on
i used the VR wire...and it was the wrong way round.
now i have a tacho...and it brings in the fuel relay aswell

thanks mate..

Glad you're sorted now, but you could have used the crank sensor, it's an 8-1 sensor wheel as far as a µS is concerned. My Yamaha GTS1000 has only four dimples in the crank, but uses a crank sensor too. Yamaha 4 cyl bikes of our vintage all use grey & orange wires for the two ignition coils, and as you noticed, they use the grey one to feed the tacho.

Perhaps, you could PM me later, as I'd be interested in your progress & settings, because I am going to fit the µS to a Thunderace engine (same crank markings as a FZR) after I get the GTS running.

Cheers
