To MS or not? Secondary throtle plates....

Post by h22 »

Just bought a KTM street bike with a 1000cc 75 degree V twin. I am debating weather to install a MS or tune the factory ECU. The drawbacks to MSing it are:
1, hacking into the stock wiring harness.
2, no control over the factory secondary throtle pates.

Benifits of MS-ing it:

1, direct WB suport
2, more elaborate tuning stratagies, i.e. x-tau and blended alpha-n (stack has this but to a lesser extent ), possible dual MAP sensor with add-on board for a more stable MAP signal.
3, Tuning on the fly (on a dyno of course)
4, control over all variables (software for tuning stock ECU only allows alteration of fuel and ignition maps, no AE or Cold start etc.)
5,MS is a bit cheeper (however this is offset by additional labor spent hacking the stock wiring harness).

So I am looking for input from anyone who has tuned a ITB twin, or any other similar motor, I realy am at a toss up, If the Micro squirt can be tuned to make the motor run smooth without the use of the secondary throtle plates then My hunch is I can tune the motor to run better with the MS given all the tuning stratagies. Any suggestions?

Anyone???
The more I read about this motor the more intregued I get, seems to be power to be had by upgrading both the exaust and intake, however the motor seems to be very sensitine to the tuning. My gut instinct is that MS could be very benificial to this motor, but would require some advanced features. I saw a post awhile back about a beta code version that was a variant of the sequencer code, allowing microsquirt to in essence become a 2cly sequential box. I think this would be ideal on a motor like this, espesially if it offered individual fuel trim as well as independant WB 02 support. If this is possible I think it would be worth the effort, I know nothing about writing code, But I would be more than willing to do some testing, I am quite good at tuning ( been doing it semi-profesionally for 5-6 years) I have access to a dyno and multiple WB units. Is it possible for the microsquirt code ( or MS2 running microsquirt code ) to do fuel trim independantly for 2 cyl? The MAP time mask and injection delay should be great tools on a finiky engine such as this ( high revving 75degree V twin with ITB's)
Thanks, Joe

In the v3.00x sequencer code I have put in trim for 2 cylinders with microsquirt (and up to 8 cylinders with sequencer hardware). However, I need to debug and test this code before I release it. I plan on doing this as part of sequencer testing in the next few months.

Also, you can use dual table mode which gives you completely different tables for each injector if there are only two injectors. That gives you more control than a fixed trim %.
