1G-GZE Ignition setup.

Post by brett_qld »

Hi all, I am attempting to run a Toyota 1G-GZE engine with a Microsquirt.

I want to use the microsquirt to control both the ignition and the fuel injection, and I am hoping to utilise as much of the standard equipment as possible.
From the research I have done I believe the engine uses a DIS ignition and bank fired fuel injection. (Correct me if I'm wrong, information is very limited on the 1st Gen 1g-gze)
I have not been able to find a wiring diagram for this particular engine and gen 2/3's are completely different.

I have begun the tedious mission of beep testing each wire, chopping and labelling the harness. (Bought the car half way through its engine swap, harness not connected, missing computers etc....)
So far I have the ignition chopped out, and Im trying to identify wiring for the ignition system.

Anybody have experience with this type of toyota igniter set up??
I have found 4 wires coming out of the Crank angle sensor, will hook up power to a switch and crank the engine to find out which wires are the VR signal.

I am having trouble trying to work out which wire I will be asking microsquirt to output to...
Wires 5,6,7,8 or 9. Anyone have ideas?

Try opening up the cam sensor and see what's inside it.

Unless you're using the module, MicroSquirts only have two ignition outputs, so that may not be the way to go here.

Thanks Matt I opened it up this morning, it has 3 sensors, 1 is the 24/1 pickup, 1 for Cyl1 TDC and 1 for Cyl6 TDC.
So the Red/White from the 24/1 sensor goes to the VRIN1+ & VRIN-?

I was hoping that the toyota DIS igniter functioned similarly to a ford EDIS6 controller, would only need PIP/SAW communication with the microsquirt.
I am guessing that pin 8 is my tach, which only leaves 5/6 and 7/9 which are on seperate plugs.
7/9 are grouped with other sensors while 5/6 seem to be with thicker gauge wires some of which go directly to each bank of injectors.

Any ideas on how I could test if the ignitor is communicating with pip/saw commands?

I do have an unassembled Megasquirt2 V3 kit , and Ive ordered an EDIS6 module just in case I cant use the toyota igniter.
I'm hoping to get the micro up and running first so I have a bit of an idea on whats going on and what to expect for when I build the Megasquirt.

If that's the same as a DLI ignitor on the 7M-GTE, it's using a multiplexed signal with three separate inputs and using the ignitor would require purpose-written code.

Cheers mate.
Looks like the Edis 6 will come in handy. Now to squeeze a 36/1 setup between the radiator and engine.... the fun part
