No Spark

Post by sn95.ohh »

Hey all,

I can not figure out why I am not getting a spark. Here is my situation

So last year we ran a KTM 560 single cyl controlling fuel and ignition and it worked great. That setup was a running a v2.2 Microsquirt module with a BIP373 controlling a diyautotune IGN-1 coil. This year we are running a Kawasaki 450 single cylinder with a v3 Microsquirt controlling fuel and ignition. My thoughts were "Hey ill just copy my tune and mimick my setup for this year because last years worked". But this were my problem comes into play. I am using the stock coil off of a 2012 Kawi 450 quad. The coil only has a hot and a ground post on it. My thoughts were that I could just run the ignition output to the coil and everything should be A-OK.

I am getting RPM and my injector is firing so its gotta be something on the ignition side that I am just completely missing. I will upload my tune and a data log.

Thank you all for the help,
Robert

A hot and a ground post would be a CDI coil - are you using a CDI module to drive it? If not, how's it wired up?

In the manual it says the ignition system is a transistorized ignition. The coil has a positive and negative. I have the battery hooked up to coil on the positive side and I have Ign 1 going to the negative side of the coil.

Ok after looking at the website for the quad it shows that the ignition system is CDI. And I guess the part that confused me was that there is no CDI module on the quad it self. Its all controlled by the ECU on the quad.

I will just try to wire up our old inductive coil from DIY that we ran last year and see if it works. I really dont want to run a CDI module. Everything seems pretty clear to me now. I was getting all the CDI stuff mixed up.

So using the IGN-1 from diyautotune im still not getting spark. From the v3 Microsquirt im running IGN1 to the center pin, giving it 12v, and grounding it to the engine. Still no spark at all. I have no idea whats going on.

I just cracked open the case and I do not see any coil drivers in it. Does the V3 board not come with the BIP373?!??!

If that is the case then I just found my problem.

Well I wired up my old bip373 and got spark. Would have been nice to know that the v3 does not have the coil drivers. Why does it not have the drivers?

I think the changes to the ignition system have been documented and discussed before, but the reason it doesn't have the drivers built in (v2 had jumpers so you could switch & isolate the built in 2 coil drivers and use logic level outputs), was probably, it reduced the chance of failure, noise & interference, plus the packaging was smaller without heatsinks etc. As the MicroSquirt was fitted to more installations patterns of troublesome areas were seen, and it's logical for developers to make this process as hassle free as possible, and isolating high current nasty feedback from sensitive electronics is part of this. Hope this helps, but at least you are up & running now. 8)

PS I have used both the internal & external drivers on my v2 projects, and external really is the better option.

Cool thanks. Ya having external isnt a problem at all. I have a brand new engine that has never been run before and it was just frustrating to have it turning over and over without firing because I didnt know the v3 didnt have the drivers on board. I didnt see anywere that said the v3 does not have the drivers. I should have read harder I suppose.
