Problems with 36-1 wheel and hall sensor trigger

Post by bockscar »

I am having serious issues setting up my trigger sensor. Overall, the setup I am using is not that usual, however the vast majority of the ignition documentation and written for VR sensors or EDIS and I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. Here are the components:

1. A custom made 36-1 trigger wheel attached to the crankshaft. This is the only trigger; no cam wheel
2. A hall sensor purchased from DIY auto tune attached to a custom bracket less than 1 mm from the wheel and 9 teeth BTDC
3. Signal wire of sensor attaches to OPTIN+ on Pin 30
4. Ground wire of sensor attaches to OPTIN- on Pin 31
5. Voltage wire of sensor attaches to VREF on Pin 28 (I also tried attaching this straight to 12 volts. DIYAutoTune says Vref is ok)
6. I am using an ignition module similar to the Bosch 0 227 100 124, so I am using the software settings from here: http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/Bosch_124.htm

When I turn the key, absolutely nothing happens. No spark and no RPM on TunerStudio. I am following all of the directions I can find and at this point, I am assuming the sensor is bad but without an oscilloscope, I cannot test that. Am I missing something fundamental here? Using a crank wheel with crank sensor doesn't sound like it should be that difficult.

Connect a voltmeter across the Vref and ground wires, confirm you have +5v. Next, connect it across the signal and ground wires, then turn the engine as slowly as possible - if this is a bike, lift the rear wheel, put it in gear, and turn the rear wheel by hand. As each tooth and gap passes the sensor, you should see the voltage reading flip-flop: 0-5-0-5-0-5 ...

Matt Cramer - I think I've asked this before, but I can't remember the answer. The copy on your site for the Hall sensors implies there is an internal pull-up, so no external pull-up is required. Is this correct?

Edit: Is this the new V3 Microsquirt, or the older V1 or V2?

Yes, it's got an internal pull up to whatever voltage is providing power.

I've got a very similar setup, I'm using a 36-1 wheel on my crank pulley and a DIYAutoTune hall sensor, I'm using 12V power and the car frame as a ground with the output going to VR1. Don't know if this helps but it works well for me at least.

Is that wire also connected to Battery negative? If not then it won't work. Sorry if you know this already.
