KTM 950 LC8

Post by ktmdude2002 »

I have finally decided to attempt a FI setup on my KTM Adventure. I've purchased the V3.0 microsquirt and Ducati throttle bodies. I'm sourcing a fuel pump/regulator and various other bits and hope to get it started before spring arrives.

I have read a few posts from others who have started injecting this motor, but haven't heard about any finished results. Several people have fitted the later model 990 FI to the 950, however it is notorious for it's snatchy power delivery and lack of control. I am hoping the microsquirt system will allow enough tunability to make the engine as flexible as possible and also a bit more economical.

I have a strong background in carb tuning, but very little in FI other than piggyback devices. Am I correct in assuming the stock 24 - 2 timing wheel will work with the standard single VR input using an odd fire configuration (75 degree V twin / -285 degrees odd fire)? Can the injectors be triggered by the timing to squirt once on the intake stroke? Does the software allow you to advance / retard timing with RPM?

Sorry for the noob questions. I'm sure it is answered in the documentation somewhere, but I tried to read some of it and got more and more confused as I went along.

Thanks,
Crusty

Hi crusty.
I too have a 950 adventure and am planning on injecting it sometime, however I am currently running a Microsquirt on my zxr750L which is now running well. I actually switched from a 36/1 trigger wheel to a24/2 (standard zx9r wheel) and it works a charm so you should have no problem with your setup. You will have total control of the ignition timing using MAP sensing and revs. You will also have no trouble with the oddfire engine just make sure you set up the Microsquirt correctly. I'm not too sure on the injection side of things but I'm sure somebody will know.
Good Luck

Hey Crusty,

I have converted my 950 to 990 EFI (KTM OEM stuff). Have ran up against the limitations of the OEM ECM and am now looking to MicroSquirt the LC8. Maybe we can collaborate a bit on the project?

Hey Head2wind,

I've read your about some of your awesome projects on the ADV site. Thanks for the interest. Unfortunately, I've had to put the FI project on the back burner for just a bit. I tore the 950 apart last spring and took measurements and worked up some layouts and mods I'm going to need to do to the throttle bodies. Once the linkage mods are done, the next issue will be fabbing an airbox.

Just as I was getting started I had some family issues that got in the way and then when I attempted a restart this fall I had a major shoulder injury requiring surgery that I'm just about recovered from. I hope to try to resume this spring in between rides and rallys. I'll get get some pics and progress reported hopefully soon.

Hi!
I'm buying a Microsquirt to control my 950 SMR.
Did you mount your MS on 950 adv?
