Tuning w/ v2.2

Post by shelbydodgeimp »

Hello all, I am relatively new here but have been a member of the MS yahoo group for years.

I was wonder how hard it is to tune an engine using the v2.2 board, is this the type of project that would require a dyno or can the MS "monitor/log" the existing fuel injectors to generate a basic fuel curve from which to start from?

Sorry for such a "noob post" but I am curious what I am getting myself into.

shelbydodgeimp,

Tuning is not particularly hard - but like most things, it depends on how much you know, and how much experience you have.

To help the knowledge side, read the tuning guide at: http://www.megasquirt.info/v22manual/mtune.htm (then re-read it a few times! :RTFM: )

For the experience side of things, if have tuned carbs, or you know someone who has that can help out, that's a big help. However, it's entirely possible to start from scratch on your own and end up with a good tune, it just takes longer.

The additional time is because most people generally make a few assumptions about how things work (that turn out not to be true), they don't follow a plan (changing one thing at a time for example), and they think some things are irrelevant (not very often), and they don't recognize the symptoms that occur (like a backfire into the intake manifold under acceleration almost always means lean, etc.).

Most of the tips you need to know are in the above link.

MS "monitor/log" the existing fuel injectors to generate a basic fuel curve from which to start from?
I use this method sometimes,

ie: I fit the MS but not to action the inj/coil

put all my constants ect in, then using a WB02 go for a drive and log what/where AFR the stock setup uses

It does help, I log, then generate a target VE based on the results, then basemap, EGO trim , log and go driving.

at the very least the car should eventually drive "stock" to a fashion using the targets as a guide, then you can play and feel where gains are to be had

dont help with ignition though
