How do I burn maps to my ecu?

Hello all, im new to megasquirt and have recently purchased a pre-assembled v2.2 that I intend to fit to my fathers 4.2 classic range rover. One kind chap gave me the settings he used on his 4.2 rover however I cannot burn these values to my ecu. Do I need to connect it to a stimulator to burn values to the ecu's memory? I connected a 12v power supply to the ecu, opened up megatune version 2.25b698beta, and entered the realime display - the time runs up to 255 and then starts from zero again. When I Click on the communications test I get "success".
Despite all this when I click "burn to controller" I get the message "could not connect with controller".
Sometimes when I try to open megatune with the ecu connected I get a message stating:
"Controller code version does not match signature in Megasquirt-I-ini. (see audit log for where the above file was found.)
Expected "0x14"
Recieved "" (from controller)
Table corruption may occur
Terminate megatune now?
Sorry if this is a bit vague as I say im new to this.
Thanks and regards to all
Nathan

Nathan,
You need to tell us what firmware is installed on the MS. It sounds like the MT configuration is incorrect, start up the MegaTune Configurator from Programs -> MegaSquirt, open the tree node named "car1" down through settings.ini -> Settings and change the value of "CODE_VARIANT" to correspond to whatever code is installed on your MS box.

Thanks for your quick response, sorry if this sounds daft but I am not sure which firmware is installed on my MS box as I bought it from someone preassembled. The ecu is marked on the bottom with "MSnEDIS LED 17 for spark, CF#08". I have tried all the code variants in the dropdown box and all of them give similar error messages. I shall try to contact the seller to find out which firmware is installed. Is there any other way of finding out?
Thanks again, Nathan

Nathan,
Get the MS Downloader and run its File -> Read Signature.

Aha, that means that you either 1) have the bootloader jumper installed, or 2) have no firmware on that processor. Look on the main board just to the left of the processor for a pair holes labelled "Boot" (hold the board with the db-9 to the left and db-37 to the right). If there is nothing in these two holes, then you have no firmware installed and need to install some.

just another....

Thanks again Eric, it does indeed seem that I have no firmware installed. The bootloader jumper wasn't installed. I have connected the MS to power with the jumper connected and tried to load some firmware using MS Download 1.04. I tried several of the s.19 files to no avail. All communication settings are correct but I get the message:
"Opened comm port 1 at 9600.
ERROR: Unknown error status response, e=0x0D
Elapsed time: 0.05 seconds"
Where do I go from here?
Thank you for help.

Eric
are you sure that he's running a MSII and not a MSI?
