Different gear, different afr?

Post by Stock »

Been busy at work for a while now but going to get back into tuning soon. I did my initial VE table tuning on road in 3rd gear and got a smooth 12.5:1 AFR @ WOT and was happy. When I ran in 1st and 2nd it was richer though. This was very consistant, 12:1 in 1st to 12.5:1 by 3rd. The datalogs show that its taking the same path across the VE table each time, just getting different AFR's (using Techedge wbo2).

Is this common?

Any ideas why it happens?

Things happen pretty fast sometimes and it's hard to tell sometimes
exactly what's-what .

I would guess that you are not actually running at 100kPa intake
pressure especially at the higher RPMs you will hit in the lower gears
that you haven't quite gotten to when your in 3rd gear .

12 to 1 is excessively rich unless your running a Blower or Nitrous and
you are trying to keep combustion temperatures down to
prevent Detonation .

You could be running into rich missfire ,
making your O2 see extra unburned Oxygen .

Not really likely , but you could have a bad or miscalibrated
O2 Controller that changes output with increasing temperature .

You should be shooting for 13.5 to 1 , and only over about 85 kPa .
If your Six is a low performance weezer engine that came with
a One Barrel Carb you can probably lean that down even more
over , say , 4000 rpm ? , to 14.5
(whatever RPM you can feel the torque start to drop off)
you can also add on some timing (3-4 degrees) after that point .

I too also have noticed this. I tune WOT in 3rd+4th gears and aim for arround 12.8:1 however in 1st gear it seems like I cant get the load on the motor and it's running richer in 1st gear dipping to 11.9:1 when i had a WB02 hooked up.

As for being a wheezer with a single carb. Stockstandards engine came stock with 220bhp, precrossflow single carb 6cyl's went out of fassion in the early/mid 70's in Aus.

Geeez , don't be so sensitive ! I said IF didn't I ?
(I didn't mean to insult your baby)

By the way I run a 6 myself .

As for the mixtures , you stumped me , mine doesn't run richer in first .

I run an Innovate WB O2 Controller with a Bosch Sensor .

Could it be AE enrichment lasting too long ? or too long Taper Time ?

Also , just for info or a maybe , what is your O2 Authority set to ?
sometimes you can get into an oscillation condition if the
O2 Authority is set too high or if your VE Table is off by too much compared
to your AFR Table .
