Getting the car started the first time

Post by andtho »

I have a problem with my MS 2.2 V3, I have wired it into the original engine wiring in my Ford Sierra 2 liter turbo. It seems that the wiring is correct so I am worried that the problem lies with a faulty MS card..

The problem is this, I enter all the information in VE table, enrichments. Burn it onto the MS card an turn of the ignition. Then I try to start the car, the engine ignites a few times but doent start, after a few tries i turn off the ignition. A few minutes later I turn it on again and all the info that I have entered is gone and the VE table and enrichments look like this:

What is causing this?

I am using Megatune 2.25

(sorry if it is difficult to understand my writing, it is many years since I used english in school)

andtho,

Typically there are two probable causes for this:

- a low battery voltage that causes the values not to get burned to the flash memory, or

- an incorrect INI file that scrambles the values when the are written, putting many of them in the wrong places.

What processor and code are you using?

Low battery might be the cause, right after this happened I wasnt able to crank the starter because of low battery.. I plugged in a battery charger last night. I will go down to garage and try again, this time with a fully charged battery.

I dont know what prossessor or code I am using.. What is the easiest way to find out?

Anders,

For the processor, see the FAQ: http://www.megamanual.com/MS%20FAQ.htm#whatis (thee are illustrations and other info).

For the code, if you have an MS-II, you would have had to load the code yourself. For MS-I, if you did not load code, the you have V3.000 code from B&G.

In any case, the way to be sure which code you have is to reload a known version of the code onto the processor. This depends on which processor you have. For MS-II, the instructions are here: http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/code.htm

I bought the MS second hand, I dont know much what the previous owner had done with it..

On top av the biggest "processor" on the card it is written 3.0 with a permanent marker.. Does that mean that it is V3.000 code?

The card look like this:

It is also printed on the card "megasquirt 2.2 by Bowling & Grippo"

Sow I presume that my card is a 2.2 card with V3.000 code..

Looks like a Megasquirt 1 Version 2.2 PCB.
Try reflashing the firmware to your MS so you have the basic starting point.
I`ve attached the MS baseline for you.
Also you will want to download the latest Megatune or what ever tuning software you prefer.
Your best bet is to start from scratch so you are not trying to overcome someone elses problems. It will also allow anyone helping you to be more efficient in their recommedations.

Something else that will make working with your Megasquirt much easier is try to find a power supply that plugs into regular household electrical outlet and has a 12vdc output with between 600 to 1200 mA. If you don`t have the Megastim you will for sure benifit from the purchase and assemby of it and it really helps with troubleshooting as well.

Okey!
I read the info on how to flash the card with new code, it says that I have to power down the card and press the Boot jumper. I cant find anything that resembles a boot jumper on my card. I see the text "boot" printed on the card, but there isnt anything "welded" to the card at these to points.. What should I do? Short sircuit these to points with i wire or something?

I`m problably the worlds biggest newbie at this, thanks for the help so far! :D

Yes.
As i thought, I always say that it is better to ask and get something verified then not to ask at all and do something wrong.. :D
