Trigger angle modification making no odds

Post by coyoteboy »

Hey all,

Ive got an odd one for you. I set up my toyota ESA system using the standard dizzy sensors (24/2 tooth with 2 sensors on the 2 tooth) as a 12-1 generic decoder with 2nd trigger. I started using 77+22.5 for my trigger angle and it does indeed run. I got the timing light out and checked and im getting almost bang on 10 degrees (set it to use fixed angle 10 degrees while finding trigger). I nearly left it (or adjusted it with the dizzy TBH) but i thought while i had the laptop out id adjust it using the trigger angle. Tried 75. Burned it. No change. Tried 70, burned it. No change. revved it a bit. Back to same place. Took off the 22.5 - white spot gone. Well at least thats changing it. Put the 22.5 back - spot re-appears in the same place (about 12-13 degrees BTDC). Tried 50. no chance. Tried 90. no change.

Am i going nuts? Should i be turning off then back on? Have i missed a setting thats over-riding it?

Also, should i be triggering on rising or falling edge, it makes no odds to the timing position. I'm feeling a little confused. It also changes location (it advances slightly) when i rev despite having fixed 10 degrees selected.

All help appreciated.

Are you using a 12-1 or a 2nd trigger ?

Don't use additions with the wheel decoder, adjust your trigger teeth so the trigger angle is say 60-80 degrees.

Can you checkout my MSQ and see if ive done something stupid please? Its in my datalogs folder below, sorry to be a pain in the bum. I'm using the stock dizzy on my yota which has a 24 tooth wheel on the cam and a 2nd 2-tooth with two sensors also on the cam. I'm struggling to set it up correctly i must admit.

Assuming you have the distributor in the stock position on your 3SGTE - 10BTDC (I recommend this approach for ease of converting back to stock), the teeth sets will fall at the following positions:
12/6 - 40BTDC
11/5 - 70BTDC
10/4 - 100BTDC

Re changing trigger angles, I have made changes to trigger angles and teeth sets on the run at minimal throttle - car stumbles badly when you send the new settings to MS (as expected!!). You can make lots of changes in MT but they wont be active until you burn them.

I believe timing should be set on the falling edge... if you are using the inverted input to the VR conditioners. A change in location suggests you may not be using the inverted input and falling edge.
