Using universal optical sensor as ignition pickup?

Post by 65ShelbyClone »

Unfortunately my turbo Briggs & Stratton doesn't have a standard 12v coil ignition and I'm exploring cost-effective options for tach and ignition signals. Anyway, I don't have any VR or Hal effect sensors, but I do have a few small 4-wire Omron optical switches.

My questions are: 1.) can I use one of these sensors and a windowed trigger wheel for the ignition pickup? 2.) Can I use the sine wave output, or will I need an additional signal conditioner to make it square wave? Thanks in advance.

Yes, I know about optical distributors and I did in fact search, but nothing addresses my questions.
