Oscillator frequency?

Post by 2wrider »

Searching around the web, I seem to find a great variety of answers to the microcontrollers oscillator frequency question.

I have the following package for a V3 Microsquirt: "MC9S12C64CFA XL09S/0M66G -40°C, 85°C 48LQFP 25MHz C128 die 64K 4K 31", which indicates a bus speed of 25MHz. As the bus clock = oscillator clock / 2, it would seem the oscillator frequency is 50MHz.

Though, looking at the chip's feature summary I see:

"— 32MHz equivalent to 16MHz bus speed for single chip
— 32MHz equivalent to 16MHz bus speed in expanded bus modes
— Option of 9S12C Family: 50MHz equivalent to 25MHz bus speed
— All 9S12GC Family members allow a 50MHz operating frequency."

So, now I'm a bit confused is it 32MHz or 50MHz

Any help would be much appreciated!

Of course, it looks like there may be an 8MHz oscillator on the board .... but, what do I know, I'm a software guy.
