TFI wiring...Spout

Post by joekamm »

I am trying to finish a Microsquirt 3 install on a 1968 Cougar with a 302 4v. I am going to use a GM TBI. I have wired the car and initialized the cpu and checked sensors. CLT IAT MAP wbo2 tps (temporarily hooked up ). the sensors work ,I have actually been driving the car for 8 months with carb and distributor. I have wired for conversion to TFI as this is a bolt in deal for the motor.
It appears that TFI is still a black art given all of the posts indicating trouble making it work. I based my wiring on a diagram from earlier this year that used vr- for PIP and wled assigned to spare port SPK A. I am just now ready to install distributor and am testing to make sure it works. ( the car is daily driven, must stay operational). I plugged in distributor and coil , initialized CPU and put the distributor into a drill and spun.. RPM YEAH!!! Hooked up a spark plug ...SPARK YEAH!!! this however could be just be built in limp home mode.
The issue is I don't think SPOUT is correct. it is a 5V signal at the module. When I wired in a pull up 1k 1/4 watt 12v source in the feed from CPU to module it did not seem to work.
I am reluctant to install distributor until I know spark table is being sent to module(SPOUT) in a format acceptable to the module.
I changed output to pin 12 IGN per newer diagrams and am still unsure if module is happy. spout attached ..no spark, unhooked spark

If you use the MS2/Extra code, you can use one of the LED circuits as a spark output. They have a standard TFI wiring diagram that is given in the MS2/Extra hardware manual for the MicroSquirt: http://www.msextra.com/doc/pdf/Microsqu ... re-3.3.pdf

Thanks for the response. I guess my question is, since the ecu is getting a reliable PIP from the TFI module, does it matter where the Spout comes from ? I.E. is the value automatically generated and sent out via IGN 1 as a 5v signal unless told otherwise ? If so, it seems I could use IGN 1 ( pin 12) and pull it up the same way as the WLED and not need to use the WLED circuit

IGN1 is a 0-5 volt signal - but the TFI is expecting a 12 volt signal.

Thanks. I will go forward with this strategy and let you know if it works

it has been a while, but I am trying this again. Using reassigned wled that I replaced with shielded cable and 12v pull up through 1k 1/4 watt resistor.
the car starts perfectly with the spout disconnected and has been timed at 10 degrees btdc. I used the advance table generator and up loaded it and thought that would solve everything. It did not, the car does not start with spout plug in. runs very well with it out. computer sees rpm accurately and appears to be calculating spout value while observing the spark table while running with spout unhooked. there is a very stable 12.18 v at the spout connector . the continuity from the spout connector to the module has been verified. not sure what to try next

i have seen several references to a 100ohm pullup instead of a 1k ohm. could this make a difference?

It might - depends on the module.
