Beginners help MX5 miata

Post by hecmac »

Good Evening,

I have been lurking in the background reading about Microsquirt and its features. I am seeking some advice re its installation. Let me start by explaining what I am doing and what I hope to achieve.

I am building a kit car based on the MX5 1994-1995 1.8 engine. Whilst happy enough with a solder iron and wiring, I liked the idea of the microsquirt as it is pre assembled and sealed. I am wiring the car fresh and not using the mx5 harness. I am hoping to run COP coils from a Toyota corolla 1.8,. The engine has a Subaru WRX TD04 turbo bolted on. I have read and re read numerous times various posts about the miata/mx5 wiring but am struggling to get my head around a few things. I would be grateful if any kind souls could help me with the following;

1, With regards to the ignition,I understand the current system is a wasted spark system firing on 1& 4 and 2&3. Assuming that the igniters on the coils 1&4 and 2&3 are physically spliced together, can the microsquirt V3 fire the coils directly via the cop, with igniter, or do I need to install an amplifier such as the Bosch 0227100211 unit referred to in the Microsquirt guidance. I have seen conflicting information out there and am now confused! So much information exists for megasquirt but not to the same extent for microsquirt.

2, I assumed, wrongly it seems, that the microsquirt ecu would simply be connected to the CAS sensor , on the cylinder head, and I would obtain the crank and cam signalneeded to fire the ignition system via microsquirt. Having read up on it,this may not be the case. Can anybody give me some guidance in how I go about providing the cas/cam signal to the ecu. I have read about pull up etc but am not sure exactly how to implement this.

Many thanks for your assistance and have a great xmas.

Regards

Hec

Toyota coils have a built in amplifier so no extra circuit is needed.

MS2/Extra has better support for the Miata CAS. Wiring is covered in the MS2/Extra MicroSquirt hardware manual. http://www.msextra.com/doc/pdf/Microsqu ... re-3.3.pdf
