2000 Yamaha Vmax

started bench testing, but having trouble finding the right combination of setting for ignition input. ideally would like to use the single crank pickup and possible set this up to control ignition timing. using pin 30 and 31 optoin+ and optoin- spark mode basic trigger when I connect it to the bike the rpm gauge just jumps around from 0 to about 4000 when I increase the rpm it just get more erratic. tried noise filtering and I can get a stable idle rpm but when I increase the rpm it just becomes erratic again.

Hi

The single crank pick up uses a long tooth trigger on the flywheel/stator. People have successfully fitted other wheels to the early engine, and that has been made to work using MSExtra. Your first obstacle is to modify the VR circuit to get an acceptable signal that the MicroSquirt can use, and you might be able to get a Hall sensor in the space too, which is more tolerant of the long tooth, but google and all will be revealed. :)

I think your biggest problem with a single long tooth will be timing accuracy, but AFAIK the VMax is like a scaled up V twin with a Yamaha TCI (inductive) wasted spark set up.

thanks for the intell. it might not be worth it to use the pickup. if I use the negative side of coil for pickup I don't want to have issues with my shifter that uses an ignition kill to make the shift or what kind of issues that I might have with an aftermarket launch limiter.

I am not sure if trying to use the crank pickup sensor if worth the trouble. I can get a good signal by using the coil negative wire. my only concern is what will the microsquirt ecu do when I use the ignition kill shifter or the aftermarket launch limiter?
