Reset Issues

Post by ZGRX1000 »

I'm having continued reset issues on my ms, while I have been using this unit regularly for about a year now, I have noticed that whenever the laptop is connected, I seem to get random backfires when starting and when I do get resets, it usually corrupts a VE, AFR or Spark table and throws some huge random number in there. I have been correcting this by reviewing all settings after a reset. I was reviewing some of the older posts and saw something about installing a capacitor on the 5v Vref circuit, do you think this might help with this issue? FYI, it's done this with 3 different laptops, different makes, models and operating systems. Second, I was also reviewing my ignition setup since I have had startup issues, I have a 24 toothed wheel with 1 missing tooth, I saw in the setup of ms, it stated that a 24 tooth with 2 missing teeth was okay, is this due to the algorythem counting of the teeth? Is it possible that my startup backfire issue is due to the number of teeth not being divisible by two and is this also a possibility of the root cause of my resets? maybe the ms interprets the tooth count as a missed count and resets? I would appreciate some direction on this, I'm planning a huge motor build upgrade and would like to have all engine issues resolved before proceeding. Thank you for any help or guidance, Paul

Hi Matt,

The ms gets its power from it's own main relay right off the battery, which feeds a 15A car audio power filter, then feeds the 2A fuse, which connects to the ms. FYI, I have also upgraded the alternator, which is capable of maintaining a system charge of up to 40A, the old system was only capable of 26A, this didn't make any difference in the restarts either. I used the TachRef program to setup my gap and signal strength checks during cranking, there was no noise found during that process. I appreciate you taking the time to help, thank you, Paul

Where is the MicroSquirt grounded?

Any spark plug wires run near wires to and from the MicroSquirt?

Another possibility that came to mind is non-resistor plugs. These tend to cause noise issues.

The high power grounds are run together to the rear of the motor, the frame ground is to the frame, through the original wiring harness. I run a Bosch Igniter Module since I have a 4 coil on plug configuration. The Plug ground to the Bosch module are seperated from the rest of the wiring by at least two inches, as are the Ign1 and Ign2 from the ECU to the Module and both sets are wrapped in their own wiring bundling.
