USB to Serial Adapters

Post by setaikai »

efahl wrote: 1) First thing to try is setting the device driver parameters (control panel -> system -> ...) for your USB adaptor to the same values as you will set inside MegaTune. That would be 9600 baud for MS-I, 115200 baud for MS-II, and 8-bits, 1-stop, no flow control.

2) While you are there, try setting all the buffering parameters to minimal size and shortest timeouts. One of the problems with these devices appears to be that they are buffering up multiple commands from MT or back from MS, because they are such short messages, and this causes no end of grief.

3) Look in c:/Program Files/MegaSquirt/mtCommon/common.ini for the parameters "interWriteDelay" and "writeBlocks". Modification of these two parameters can sometimes help eliminate comm errors, but the default values of "1" and "off", respectively, have been found to be the correct ones in most situations.

Need Help USB to SERIAL PORT

I use a Belkin USB-Serial adapter(AKA PDA adapter). Up till today it worked without any problems. Now using the experimental MT code I have had some comm errors, but can still run everything.

Need Help USB to SERIAL PORT

Post by BartonsBest »

My experiences with usb-to-rs232 converters show they work ok when handshaking is not required. Due to the real-time datalogging challenge, I would recommed a different approach. Possible a pcmcia serial card. You could prob. find one cheap on ebay and such.

Good Luck!

Need Help USB to SERIAL PORT

I tried an ATEN USB to serial 232A.
It works well. Haven't tried it so much, since MS is not installed in car yet, but megatune and communication with MS works.

USB to Serial Adapters

Post by efahl »

Guys,

I asked Mike to move this thread over to the MegaTune forum, rename it and make it sticky, so we can pool our collective experience on USB adapters and maybe build up a list of recommended ones. If anyone has been using a USB adapter and has any comments on it, please post here and give as much detail as you can (manufacturer, part number, source, approximate cost, funky behavior with any specific software or hardware, and so on).

Thanks,
Eric

USB to Serial Adapters

I have a "Proficient" USB to serial adapter. Translcent blue case, and translucent cable. I've seen it sold under a handful of names, but the blue case and clear cable are good indicators. It "works" assuming not a lot of data is sent. Will not properly send a VE table for example. I ended using the serial port on a port replicator, never had a problem since. Check out eBay for port replicators, I got mine for 20$.
