USB to Serial Adapters
Please grab this microsoft utility, run it on your machine and post back here what it tells you about your serial connection. Include some comments about whether you've ever had problems or not, so we can try to figure out the pattern here...

USB to Serial Adapters
The USB adaptors we are talking about connect up to a USB port on a PC, and the PC has drivers on it that enumerate an RS232 port from a USB connection.
What version of Palm doesn't have an rs232 port? you would need to write a special driver for your palm in order to use the usb-serial converter that is dicussed here.
OK, they convert bidirectional USB serial data to-from RS232. They usually are just a Pic style microcontroller and a single chip level converter like the max232, you need the driver on the PC end to send the right config commands to and from the pic, the driver separates out the serial data from the USB, and sends it to your "Port" which is then sent to your program. Basically. Does that make any sense?

USB to Serial Adapters
Re: Need Help USB to SERIAL PORT
The problem I am seeing is that the com port is a moving target. Seems like everytime I run MT the MS is on a different com port. Tonight it was on com10. Since MT only goes up to com9 I am sol. At least until it decides to go back into the single digits.setaikai wrote:Guyz I have a laptop that does not have a serial port......so can I use a USB to serial port convertor to do this or how????![]()
Please help me to solve this problem.

Thank U....
Scott: (I assume you were responding to my post.) I am using the Prolific usb-serial cable. OS is WinXP Pro. When you say "go into the driver" how do I do that?MegaScott wrote:You can go into the driver and make it whatever com port you want. What usb-serial device are you using, and what is your OS?

I've never heard of the numbers going over 9, I'll change it so that
99 is the max.
Is there any pattern as to when or why they change, maybe a reboot?

If there is a pattern, I've yet to catch it. I think it depends on what usb devices you have connected at boot time. Since I use different usb devices at home vs at work I think mine changes a lot. MS started at com6 and is now com10. Creeping com port I guess it's called.
