hint: if it runs really slowly make sure your not running too many other high-priority processes (ie do a killall artsd or killall esd)

hint 2: as root 'chmod a+rwx /dev/ttyS0' or whichever tty device your MS is connected to.

hint 3: commercial wine distro's work quite well, eg crossover office & cedega

hint 4: i think pre-emptive kernels and loaded-up systems introduce latency between rs232 signal and when megatune receives it. run a tight ship. on my system kde makes megatune lose signal sometimes. i reccomend fluxbox or XFCE as window managers

My system utilization is 0 when i attempt the download. The kernel was custom built by me as skinny as possible without sacraficing functionality. I also tried renicing the process to the highest priority to no avail. I run KDE 3.4 and I beleive that X causes megatune to hiccup at higer screen updates in full screen ie..more visual activity. I suspect X runs at a higher priority then KDE since the window manager ends up failing before the screen goes dead. Bringing down the size of the window eliminates the problem. The permissions are also correct for the serial port. I have checked all the basic stuff. I think I will try an strace and see what the app is actually doing.

When you run the downloader do you use wine dos shell emulator?

My system is SuSE10 all patched and up to date.

Thanks for the tips, I will post back when I have any results.

No that is primarily in FTP data transfers. I still get support tickets for that exact problem. Primarily in old mainframe systems that default to ascii.
