Trigger angle modification making no odds

Hey all,
Ive got an odd one for you. I set up my toyota ESA system using the standard dizzy sensors (24/2 tooth with 2 sensors on the 2 tooth) as a 12-1 generic decoder with 2nd trigger. I started using 77+22.5 for my trigger angle and it does indeed run. I got the timing light out and checked and im getting almost bang on 10 degrees (set it to use fixed angle 10 degrees while finding trigger). I nearly left it (or adjusted it with the dizzy TBH) but i thought while i had the laptop out id adjust it using the trigger angle. Tried 75. Burned it. No change. Tried 70, burned it. No change. revved it a bit. Back to same place. Took off the 22.5 - white spot gone. Well at least thats changing it. Put the 22.5 back - spot re-appears in the same place (about 12-13 degrees BTDC). Tried 50. no chance. Tried 90. no change.
Am i going nuts? Should i be turning off then back on? Have i missed a setting thats over-riding it?
Also, should i be triggering on rising or falling edge, it makes no odds to the timing position. I'm feeling a little confused. It also changes location (it advances slightly) when i rev despite having fixed 10 degrees selected.
All help appreciated.
