Yamaha pickup coils

I am currently in the planning and research stages. I would like to try injecting one of my 4-cylinder Yamahas.

These bikes use pickup coils that look like the attached pictures. Can Microsquirt use this kind of a setup, or do I need to switch to something else to read the crank position? What type of sensors are they?

The internet ate your pics. Most Yamaha crank sensors are VR, which the Microsquirt can read no problem. Where the fun begins is when you consider the trigger tooth pattern; a lot of older bikes use a long-tooth pattern that gives the VR circuitry absolute fits.

What bike is this?

Hi

As dontz125 says, which Yamaha is it? If it's an early FZ700, 750, FZ1000 or YZF1000 Thunderace, then you are in luck using the stock set up, as there is some code on the other forum. I know, because I got it working successfully.

I do know of another unit that will work with anything, but it is nowhere near as software friendly as the Microsuirt/Megasquirt/MSExtra community scene.

I think I got the pics fixed.

My Yamahas are FJ600, FJ1200 and XJ550. I think the engines are very similar, 550 and 600 are practically the same.

The twin sensors on a mounting plate are VR sensors, and will work with the uS. That rotor, unfortunately, will not - that long tooth is what I was talking about when I mentioned that the conditioner circuit didn't like a lot of Yamaha wheels. Fortunately, since your trigger rotor comes off so easily, it will be similarly easy to install a 'normal' missing-tooth wheel, such as 12-3, 24-2 or 36-1. Measure your wheel's OD, then take a look at the offerings at DIY Autotune.

When you go to wire the unit up, only use one sensor - the uS will keep track of the various cylinders using one sensor and the wheel.

I have a Honda that uses a similar two wire sensor on the cam for the ignition signal, except the rotating element is a magnet.
Would it work with uS as a second input to differentiate TDC compression from TDC exhaust?

If it has one 'tooth' per revolution, or if it is an M-N missing tooth wheel, then yes it should work as a cam signal.

For B&G code, this is called 'dual spark' inputs, and you can read about it here: http://www.useasydocs.com/details/dualspark.htm and you can read about ignition inputs here: http://www.useasydocs.com/theory/vr.htm Dual spark also gives you two spark outputs, which you can use as wasted spark outputs on a 4 cylinder engine (or non-wasted park on a 2 cylinder engine).

i would like to get in on this thread as i am working with almost the same pick ups..i.e. a kawasaki zg1000 concours 2001 with dual VR pick ups, i started out with my own made 36-1 wheel, but discovered there was not enough gap in between teeth, so i cut it down to an 18-1, but i am still having issues with it reading and sparking correctly no matter what i seem to do....help!

turbomax,

You problem could be anything from incorrect sensor spacing to the teeth to induced noise in the wiring to the wrong setup in the code for your setup.

To narrow it down, it would help if you posted your hardware version (presumably a microsquirt, but V2 or V3?), code version, MSQ (settings file), a datalog of the problem (so we can see the problem as well as the diagnostic parameters), and a thorough description of your trigger wheel, sensor(s), wiring, and engine configuration.
